How the USA calculation works โ tax year 2026
Federal income tax in the USA is charged in slices: only the dollars inside each band are taxed at that bandโs rate. A higher salary never makes your take-home pay go down. FICA โ Social Security and Medicare โ is charged on top, at flat rates.
Worked example: $60,000 salary, single filer, 2026
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross salary | $60,000 |
| Standard deduction (single, 2026) | โ$16,100 |
| Taxable income | $43,900 |
| Federal tax: 10% ร $12,400 = $1,240, plus 12% ร $31,500 = $3,780 | $5,020 |
| FICA: Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45% = 7.65% ร $60,000 | $4,590 |
| Take-home pay | $50,390 / year โ about $4,199 / month |
Social Security is only charged on the first $184,500 of wages in 2026 (the wage base, up from $176,100 in 2025). Medicare has no cap, and an extra 0.9% applies on wages over $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). State income tax, health-insurance premiums and 401(k) contributions are not in this example โ they change the result, which is why every figure on this site is an estimate.
